What is the KRACK vulnerability and how can you protect yourself against it?

January 22, 2018 by Sean McCormack

What is the KRACK vulnerability and how can you protect yourself against it?
Recently, security researchers uncovered a huge flaw with Wi-Fi networks that has made them extremely vulnerable. According to the researchers, a vulnerability known as KRACK has been discovered. It essentially makes all advanced encryption protocols completely useless and can affect just about any wireless device. It’s important to know more about this flaw and how you can protect yourself against it.

What Exactly is This Vulnerability?

KRACK is a type of vulnerability in Wi-Fi networks. It is actually an acronym for “key reinstallation attack” and leaves your Wi-Fi network weak against hackers so that they can bypass WPA2, which is a security protocol included in devices and routers. From there, the hackers are able to obstruct sensitive data that travels between a mobile device and the router, such as login information, emails, credit card numbers and more.

In the most extreme cases, vulnerable devices can be controlled remotely. This is extremely scary and can result in hackers gaining access to your surveillance systems and shutting them down. Additionally, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as smart cameras, smart thermostats and others, rarely ever get security patches. Even when patches are available, they are usually difficult to apply because the user interfaces of these devices tend to be complicated.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to minimize your risk of becoming a victim of this security issue.

Immediately Download Available Patches

Recent reports have stated that a number of security patches have been released for a number of platforms, including Android, Windows and iOS. Manufacturers of routers, including Meraki, FortiNet, Unbiquiti and Mikrotik have also released firmware updates. It’s important to download any of these available patches as soon as possible.

Patches for Internet of Things devices is extremely rare, and as previously mentioned, they tend to be highly complex. Nonetheless, if there are patches available for your IoT devices, it’s wise to get in touch with a managed services provider who can install the updates for you if you are not a highly tech-savvy individual.

Rely on Ethernet Connections

Unfortunately, some wireless routers don’t yet have a security patch to protect against the vulnerability. However, in the meantime, you can keep your devices safe by using the Internet via an Ethernet cable and disabling your router’s wireless ability. Make sure to also turn off Wi-Fi on your devices to ensure that you aren’t connecting to any susceptible networks.

Avoid Using Public Wi-Fi Networks

Even if you find a public Wi-Fi network that’s password-protected, you should avoid it and all other public Wi-Fi. Typically, such connections don’t have any security measures in place, which makes them especially vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Only Access HTTPS Websites

If you have to connect to any public Wi-Fi hotspots, make sure you do so on websites that have HTTPS. Those encrypt the traffic between the browser and the site.

Use a VPN

One of the best ways to protect yourself from the vulnerability is to use a virtual private network (VPN) while browsing the web. VPNs hide your true IP address and encrypt your connection, which keeps your data safe from hackers and other online criminals.

Overall, the KRACK vulnerability is certainly serious. However, with the right tools and knowledge, you can stay safe while online. Magnify247.com provides computer support in Noblesville, IN and we are always ready to help!
