We have your system set to update these programs automatically via the Internet. But, that can only happen when you turn on your computer, connect it to the internet, and leave it on long enough.
Q: What is long enough?
At an absolute minimum, your computer needs to be on and connected for two hours every day. If you use your computer for business or daily personal use, this is probably not a problem for you. If you use it for occasional personal use, you must get in the habit of Turning On–Connecting–Leaving On every day to allow updates.
Q: What time of day should I do this?
Any time of day or night will work.
Q: What happens if I don’t?
If you do not do this, you will eventually (if you haven’t already!) be attacked by a virus, be hijacked by ransomware, lose your data, lose functionality of the programs you use, or worse. Any of those outcomes will require more than a little time and money to fix if it can be fixed at all. The worst-case scenario is that you may have to buy a new computer and start over. We have had to help clients recover from this type of thing, and it could have been prevented by simply Turning On–Connecting–Leaving On every day.
Q: What about weekends and vacations?
After returning from a weekend or a vacation, you will need extra time for the accumulated updates to complete. On your first day back, Turn On–Connect–Leave On for 6 to 8 hours. This is not an ideal situation, but life happens, and we must do the best we can.
