FREE (do-it-yourself) Identity Theft Protection

July 14, 2026 by Sean McCormack

Identity Theft Protection involves actively monitoring your personal data, freezing your credit reports, and securing your accounts to stop fraudsters.

The good news is – you can manage this entirely yourself for FREE !

If you prefer to manage your data without a subscription service (e.g., Lifelock, IdentityGuard, etc.), the most effective protection methods are free and entirely within your control.

Complete these simple and effective steps to keep your identity secure:

Freeze Your Credit

To restrict access to your credit file. This prevents thieves from opening new accounts in your name. To freeze your credit, you must contact all three major bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) individually. You can complete this for free online or by phone. You will need your Social Security number, date of birth, and address.  Call or use the links below to freeze your credit:

Equifax: https://www.equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services/credit-freeze  – or call 1–888–298–0045

Experian: https://www.experian.com/help/credit-freeze  – or call 1–888–397–3742

TransUnion: https://www.transunion.com/credit-freeze  – or call 1–888–909–8872
